The Stratosphere-to-Troposphere Transport Related to Rossby Wave Breaking and Its Impact on Summertime Ground-Level Ozone in Eastern China

چکیده
In summertime, eastern China experiences severe ozone pollution. Stratosphere-to-troposphere transport (STT), as the primary natural source of tropospheric ozone, may have a non-negligible contribution to ground-level ozone. Rossby wave breaking (RWB) is leading mechanism that triggers STT, which can be categorized anticyclonic breakings (AWBs) and cyclonic (CWBs). This study uses an objective method diagnose AWBs CWBs investigate their influence on surface in using ground-based observations, satellite data from AIRS, stratospheric tracer simulated by CAM-chem, meteorological fields MERRA-2. The results indicate occur mainly frequently over northeast China, while mostly northern Sea Japan. STTs triggered sinking areas North Plain, increasing concentrations 5–10 ppbv China. downwelling zones extend Mongolia East Sea, potentially causing elevation both central gives overview impacts helps improve our understanding summertime pollution

[1] Events involving stratosphere-troposphere exchange (STE) of ozone, such as tropopause folds and westerly ducts, are readily identified in observations and models, but a quantitative flux specifying where and when stratospheric ozone is mixed into the troposphere is not readily discerned from either. This work presents a new diagnostic based on determining when stratospheric air is mixed and...
